Richard’s photographic work has been featured in many publications including Border Crossings and Canadian Art. His work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions and has also been featured in numerous exhibition catalogues. Whenever possible these documents will be available as downloadable PDFs. A particular highlight is the catalogue generously produced by Platform: Centre for Photographic + Digital Art for Richard’s solo exhibition in January 2008. Steven Matijcio, who is presently the Curator of Contemporary Art at the South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, provides the text.

Family Photos: Doug Dubois and Richard Hines Talk About Mixing Art with Kin
"In our heads, we all have our mark, this idealized image of ourselves. When we look at a photograph of ourselves, it’s not just an image – like in a mirror – but a picture of our ideals, our self-image. And when the photograph inevitably falls short, or goes awry, or every once in a while, exceeds our expectations, we have to accept or reject it. Most people, myself included, are too self-conscious to comfortably look at their own image".

Pictures from (Inside)
"Fusing memory, fantasy and suggestion with classic cinematic tropes, Pictures from (Inside) is an ongoing series of photos that mine the secrets behind the shuttered blinds of houses and their inhabitants."

Performing Home
Gallery 44 presents two series of works, Pictures from (Inside), photographs by Richard Hines, and Defenders of the Faith, video works by Nicole Raufeisen and Ryan Witt. Both series of works result from a pensive energy that the artists have channeled into their pieces.
